Who is Love in Action?
Love in Action is a part of the Equippers Christchurch People Care Team. It's our aim to do our best to make sure the needs of the people in our community are taken care of.
The Vision
Have you ever wondered what a community could look like when we all work together to ensure everyone is cared for? We do. There are a few bible verses that really catch our imagination of what community could be like and the things that God takes pleasure in. Two of those verses are in Acts:
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Acts 2:42-47
We love the imagery of the unity of the church displayed here, especially how it talks about having everything in common and selling property or possessions to give to anyone in need. It’s a sacrificial love that the community had for each other. The second Acts passage is:All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.
Acts 4:32-35
Again, the imagery of being one in heart and mind, sharing everything, and God’s grace being powerfully at work gets our imagination working overtime about the potential of what a community like this could look like.
This is our vision – to see people love and support others knowing that if they have a need it will be met by the community. To see a community who so naturally cares for each other that they draw others in simply by the way they live.
What we do
Simply put: we aim to look after those in our community who are in need. This can take on many forms but right now we’re focused on providing meals.
How we can work together
Are you keen to help us? We’d love for you to come work with us. Here are some ways that you can help:
- Make meals: check out our list of recipes and our guidelines to get started. Once you’ve made a meal, drop it in to our church offices.
- Deliver meals: not all of us have the ability or time to make meals, but maybe you can pick up a meal and deliver it to someone?
- Donate: making meals for people can be costly. If you’ve got the ability, we’d love for you to donate either food ingredients or money to help with the process.
- Pray: A really simple, yet powerful, way to help those we are trying to serve is through prayer. Praying for those who are serving or for those receiving would be great as we can all do with more prayer. If you make a meal, pray a blessing over the recipient – even if you don’t know who that will be. If you are delivering a meal pray for the people who are receiving it. We want the things we do to be a way to look after others and make them feel a part of our community, but we also want them to be opportunities for further interactions with these people.
- Let us know if there are other ways you can help: As mentioned in the what we do above, we aim to look after those in our community who are in need and this can take many forms. You may not be able to assist with meals but might be willing to mow lawns. We’d love to start building a list of volunteers who can do other things such that if we identify needs within our community we can reach out to you. If you’re not sure of what ways you might be able to help, check out our list of potential ways to serve.
